Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Blueberry simple syrup — These blueberry mojitos use blueberry simple syrup made from fresh blueberries rather than mashing the blueberries into the cocktail itself. Although mashed blueberries sound like a good idea, it doesn’t work as well in cocktails. Blueberry syrup gives a stronger blueberry taste, and gives the mojito a smoother consistency.
- Easy to make for a crowd — Using blueberry syrup actually means it’s faster to make this drink. You can easily make a handful of drinks for a group in under ten minutes, or just one drink in less than 5 minutes.
- Perfect balance of flavors — These mojitos are not too sugary and not too strong. You can taste the strong fizzy blueberry flavor, with the fresh mint and just a slight hint of rum.
- Makes a great mocktail — For those who want a non alcoholic version, this blueberry mojito can easily be turned into a blueberry mojito mocktail to accommodate everyone.
Ingredients & Substitutions
- Blueberries: Use fresh blueberries if it is blueberry season, otherwise you can use frozen blueberries. If you are using frozen berries, partially thaw them before making the syrup.
- Mint Leaves: Every mojito has to have mint! Use any type of fresh mint leaves. Dried mint leaves won’t work in this recipe.
- Lime Juice: Use freshly squeezed lime juice. Bottled lime juice doesn’t have the same fresh lime zing that makes a mojito so tasty.
- Rum: Any white rum that you have will work. If you have a favorite, use that.
- Club Soda: Club soda or sparkling water adds a bit of fizz to top off the mojito. You can also use Sprite or 7Up, but these will add a stronger lime flavor.
- Sugar: Granulated sugar is used to make the blueberry syrup. Brown sugar won’t work for this recipe.
- Water: Use filtered water to avoid any unpleasant flavors from tap water.
Equipment
Here is the equipment you will need to make the blueberry mojitos:
- A small saucepan and a strainer to make the blueberry simple syrup with.
- An airtight container to store any leftover blueberry syrup.
- Highball cocktail glasses to serve the mojitos.
Step By Step Instructions
Step 1: Add the blueberries, sugar and water to a saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally and squishing the blueberries to release their juices. Once the sugar has dissolved, remove the syrup from the stove and strain out the blueberry chunks.
Step 2: Muddle the blueberry syrup, lime juice and mint leaves together. Add in a handful of ice. Stir in the rum and top off with club soda.
Variations
Here are some creative variations of these blueberry mojitos to try:
- Blueberry Lavender Mojito: Replace half of the blueberry simple syrup with this lavender syrup.
- Blueberry Lemon Mojito: Use lemon juice instead of lime juice. Add an extra ½ oz of juice for a stronger lemon flavor.
- Blueberry Pineapple Mojito: Add in a dash of pineapple juice.
- Blueberry Basil Mojito: Muddle in some fresh basil leaves along with the mint leaves. Or, add in a dash of this basil simple syrup.
Expert Tips
- Use mojito mint. There are lots of different types of mint plants, which all have a slightly different taste. For the most authentic mint flavor, use mojito mint (called Mentha Villosa) if you can find it.
- Use a wooden spoon to muddle. If you don’t have a proper muddler, use a small wooden spoon to gently press out the mint juices.
- Store leftover blueberry syrup in the fridge. This recipe will make extra blueberry syrup. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 to 2 weeks.
- Save the blueberry chunks. Don’t discard the blueberry chunks when you remove them from the syrup! They are perfect for mixing into plain Greek yogurt for a healthy breakfast.
