If you’ve never had pudding shots before, they are the tastiest type of shot recipe. There are lots of varieties to try, such as these Tequila Rose Pudding Shots or these RumChata Pudding Shots.

They make great, sweet dessert-like shots for a big party.

And if you love Kahlua, you are going to love these pudding shots with Kahlua.

Some of my other favorite Kahlua recipes include this RumChata White Russian or this Brown Cow Drink.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Easy to Make — All you need are 4 ingredients for this recipe and in just over 30 minutes, you can have a batch of these shots ready to go.
  • Crowd Pleaser — Everyone always loves pudding shots, and these Kahlua based ones are no exception. The combination of coffee-flavored Kahlua and chocolate is always popular.
  • Customizable — You can make these pudding shots using only Kahlua, or you can add in another type of alcohol for a combination of flavors (Baileys for example).
  • Christmas Shots — Kahlua is a popular liqueur around Christmasstime, making these shots a great holiday recipe for family get togethers.

Ingredients & Substitutions

The ingredients needed for the pudding shots with Kahlua.
  • Kahlua: Kahlua is a coffee liqueur that is easy to find in almost all liquor stores. You can use another type of coffee liqueur as a substitute. Keep in mind that you can taste the Kahlua well in these shots, so choose a liqueur you enjoy the taste of.
  • Chocolate Pudding: You will need one pack of instant chocolate pudding mix. Chocolate is an easy flavor to find and goes really well with Kahlua, but you can substitute this with any pudding flavor. Butterscotch and Oreo would also be delicious with this recipe.
  • Milk: Use whole milk for the creamiest pudding shots.
  • Cool Whip: You can find Cool Whip in a box in the freezer section. A bit of Cool Whip is folded into these pudding shots to make them light and fluffy.

How To Make Chocolate Kahlua Pudding Shots

Step 1: Using a fork or a whisk, mix together the chocolate pudding powder, milk and Kahlua.

Step 2: Fold in the Cool Whip.

Step 3: Continue to gently mix the pudding until smooth.

Step 4: Divide the mixture into shot glasses and chill the shots in the fridge for 30 minutes until they have set.

Storage

These Kahlua Pudding Shots can be made up to 3 to 4 days in advance. Store the shots covered in the fridge.

If the pudding shots have been sitting in the fridge for a while, the Kahlua can slightly sink to the bottom, making the bottom of the shot more concentrated.

Before serving, gently stir the pudding shots. Then, add any toppings and serve immediately.

Expert Tips

  • Keep the Kahlua and milk cold. While not necessary, it is easier to mix the pudding ingredients together when the milk and Kahlua are cold.
  • Wait a minute to help the ingredients dissolve. When you are mixing the ingredients together, if you find the powder or the Cool Whip is not fully dissolving, wait a minute and then stir again. This will help you get a much smoother consistency.
  • Add garnish. If you are serving these pudding shots at a party, these shots are much more presentable with a bit of garnish. Top them with a dollop of whipped cream, mini chocolate chips, chocolate sprinkles or some chocolate shavings.
  • Reduce the alcohol. These pudding shots do taste strongly of Kahlua. If you don’t want them to taste as strong, replace some of the Kahlua with milk.

Variations

Chocolate & Kahlua is a classically delicious combination, but there are lots of ways to vary these shots. Here are some ideas:

  • Baileys: Replace half of the Kahlua with Baileys. You can use original Baileys, or try one of their unique flavors, such as Baileys Salted Caramel or Red Velvet Baileys.
  • Vodka: For stronger shots, replace some of the Kahlua with vodka. Whipped cream or cupcake flavored vodka would be delicious with the Kahlua.
  • Butterscotch: Butterscotch and Kahlua go really well together, kind of like in this Butterfinger Drink. Use butterscotch pudding instead of chocolate pudding.

Recipe FAQs

How many pudding shots does this recipe make?

Depending on the size of your shot or shooter glasses, this recipe will make about 10 to 16 pudding shots.

Try serving pudding shots with mini spoons so guests can enjoy them like mini dessert cups.

Yes. As long as the pudding is instant pudding, you can use a reduced sugar or low fat pudding mix.

You can use regular shot glasses that you probably already have on hand, or you can use disposable pudding shot containers if you’re serving a large group of friends.
