Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Bright Blue — The color of this shot is really unique. The blue curaçao combines with the creamy Almondaire to make a light blue color (similar to the color of this Blue Kamikaze Shot), but because of the Almondaire, the shot is opaque.
  • Sweet & Creamy — Although all the ingredients contain alcohol in this shot, it doesn’t taste like that. This is a sweet and creamy shot that will be a crowd pleaser.
  • Easy to Make — With just 3 ingredients, you only need a few minutes to whip up a large batch for a group of friends.

What Is Almondaire?

Almondaire is a creamy, almond-based liqueur that is similar to Baileys Almande.

It can be enjoyed on the rocks, or in creamy cocktails or shots.

Almondaire is not sold in every liquor store and depending on where you live, you may not be able to find it easily (although you can always order it online). But there are a few substitution suggestions below so you can still make this blue moon shot without it.

Ingredients & Substitutions

The ingredients needed to make the blue moon shot.
  • Almondaire: Almondaire is a cream-based almond liqueur that is sold in specialty liquor stores or online. As a substitute, use Baileys Almande or RumChata — both of which are much easier to find in your local liquor store.
  • Blue Curaçao: Blue curaçao is what gives this shot its bright blue color. You can use any brand of blue curaçao you like. You can also use a non alcoholic blue curaçao if you want to reduce the alcohol content of these shots.
  • Amaretto: Disaronno is generally the most popular type of amaretto, but you can use whatever type you have. As a substitute, you could try dark rum, which will change the flavor profile of the shot but will still taste delicious.

How To Make A Blue Moon Shot

Step 1: Add the Almondaire, blue curaçao and amaretto to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.

Step 2: Shake well and strain into a shot glass.

Expert Tips

  • Make it into a blue moon cocktail. If you want to turn this blue moon shot into a blue moon cocktail, you can double or triple the quantities of the ingredients and serve it in a cocktail glass. I would recommend using a non alcoholic blue curaçao syrup in this case so the drink isn’t overly strong.
  • Try a substitution. There are a few creative ways to modify this shot for a flavor variation. Try subbing the Almondaire with RumChata, for example, or even with Baileys Original Irish Cream.
  • Chill the shot glasses. This shot is most enjoyable when served ice cold. Chill the shot glasses in the freezer for 30 minutes before serving.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make this blue moon shot without Almondaire?

Yes. You can use Baileys Almande or RumChata instead of Almondaire.

Can I make these shots in advance?

Yes. You can make these shots a few hours in advance and store them in the fridge until you are ready to serve them.
