Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Mini Version — This Alabama Slammer Shot is a mini version of the famous Alabama Slammer Cocktail. It is made with the same ingredients, but uses a bit less orange juice so it tastes a bit stronger, which is perfect for a shot.
  • Easy to Make — You can make a large batch of these shots in under 5 minutes.
  • Customizable — The types of alcohol used in these shots are not your staple liqueurs, so there are suggestions for substitutions to make this recipe work even if you don’t have all the ingredients.

Ingredients & Substitutions

The ingredients needed to make the Alabama Slammer shot.
  • Southern Comfort: Southern Comfort is a liqueur made from whiskey, blended with fruits and spices. Southern Comfort has a unique flavor and there is no perfect substitute for it, but you can replace it with whiskey or bourbon for these shots.
  • Sloe Gin: Sloe gin is a liqueur made with gin and sloe berries. Not every liquor store will carry sloe gin, depending on where you live. As a substitute, you can try blackberry gin or blackberry vodka. Or you can use a combination of regular gin and Blackberry Simple Syrup or Raspberry Simple Syrup.
  • Amaretto: Amaretto is an Italian liqueur with a nutty, almond flavor. There are many different types of Amaretto, but the most popular is probably Disaronno.
  • Orange Juice: Freshly squeezed orange juice is always best, but for shots, you can easily use store bought juice instead to make preparation faster.

How To Make An Alabama Slammer Shot

Step 1: Pour the Southern Comfort, amaretto, sloe gin and orange juice into a cocktail shaker with ice.

Step 2: Shake well and strain into a shot or shooter glass.

Expert Tips

  • Chill the shot glasses. To keep these shots extra cold, chill the shot glasses in the fridge or freezer for about an hour before serving them.
  • Add garnish. Serve these shots with an orange slice on the side or garnished with a maraschino cherry.
  • Make a variation. Replace the orange juice with another fruity juice for a unique variation. Try pineapple juice, mango juice or a tropical juice blend.

Recipe FAQs

How do I turn this into an Alabama Slammer Cocktail?

If you want to make these shots into a cocktail, multiply the quantity by 2 or 3 times and use double the amount of orange juice.

Can I replace the sloe gin with regular gin?

Sloe gin is not the same as regular gin. You can replace the sloe gin with a blackberry liqueur or a combination of blackberry simple syrup and regular gin, but the flavor will not be quite the same.
