During apple season, everyone is looking for different and creative apple recipes. This smoothie recipe is one of the quickest and easiest ways to eat those leftover apples.

Other ways you can use up your apples are by making fresh apple juice for this caramel apple mimosa, or baked into this apple & cherry crumble.

For other fall smoothie ideas, try this blueberry tahini smoothie or this pear banana smoothie.

Apples and chocolate?

Everyone knows slices of apples with chocolate spread go well together. So when they are blended together in a smoothie, it is no different.

If you love chocolate flavored smoothies, try this strawberry banana chocolate smoothie, chocolate pineapple smoothie or this chocolate mango smoothie.

Most of the time chocolate flavored smoothies use cocoa powder + some type of natural sweetener such as honey. However, I find that chocolate milk gives a more chocolatey flavor with none of the bitterness of cocoa powder.

That being said, you can substitute the chocolate milk with cocoa powder if needed (see below).

Ingredients for This Chocolate Apple Smoothie

Apples— Use fresh, whole apples. Don’t try to substitute them for apple juice. Using a whole apple adds thickness and creaminess to the smoothie.

Chocolate Milk— This adds the most chocolate flavor to any smoothie. However, if you want to substitute it for cocoa powder, use regular milk instead and add 4-5 teaspoon of cocoa powder and 1-2 tablespoon of maple syrup.

You will need to add extra sweetener (maple syrup) to balance out the bitterness of the cocoa powder.

Cinnamon— A dash of cinnamon gives this drink a fall flavor.

Maple Syrup— This adds a little bit of sweetness. You can substitute this with honey.

Expert Tips

  • For extra creaminess, add yogurt. If you want a thicker, smoother smoothie, add in a bit of yogurt.
  • Use a high quality blender. A good quality blender is important for this smoothie, especially if you are blending the apples with their skin on. Make sure your blender is able to fully break down all the pieces of apple skin into a smooth drink.
