Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Great for St. Patrick’s Day — These pudding shots are bright green which makes them perfect for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day! Add some green and gold sprinkles to really fit the theme.
  • Versatile — This recipe uses vodka, but there are suggestions below for all the different types of alcohol and liqueur that would work well in this recipe.
  • Easy To Make — It takes less than 10 minutes to mix these shots together, then you just have to let them set in the fridge.

Ingredients & Substitutions

The ingredients needed to make the pistachio pudding shots.
  • Pistachio Pudding: You’ll need one box of instant pistachio pudding. Most large grocery stores will offer this flavor, but if not, you can easily order some online.
  • Vodka: Use whatever type of vodka you like. If you like, you can use a flavored citrus vodka, such as lemon vodka. It is also easy to replace the vodka with another type of alcohol or liqueur (see the suggestions below).
  • Milk: You can use any type of milk, but whole milk will make the creamiest shots.
  • Cool Whip: You can find Cool Whip in the frozen sections at the grocery store. Cool Whip makes the shots extra light and fluffy.

Best Alcohol For Pistachio Pudding Shots

Unlike some other types of pudding shots, pistachio pudding shots are incredibly versatile. They work with so many different types of alcohol.

This recipe uses vodka, but you can easily make a 1:1 substitution for any type of alcohol you like. You can also use a combination of different alcohols or liqueurs for a unique combination.

Here are some ideas for alcohols & liqueurs to try:

  • Amaretto
  • Baileys
  • RumChata
  • White Rum
  • Malibu (Coconut Rum)
  • Kahlua
  • Pineapple Vodka

How To Make Pistachio Pudding Shots

Step 1: Mix the pistachio pudding powder, milk and vodka together. Stir to dissolve any clumps.

Step 2: Fold in the Cool Whip.

Step 3: Divide the pistachio pudding shots into your shot glasses and chill them in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.

Storage

These Pistachio Pudding Shots will be good in the fridge for up to 2 to 3 days. Store them in sealed shot containers. If your shot containers don’t have lids, cover them with plastic wrap.

Sometimes the alcohol can “sink” to the bottom of the shot over time. If this is the case, gently stir the pudding shots before serving them.

For freshness, add any optional garnishes right before serving (ie. whipped cream, sprinkles).

Expert Tips

  • Use fun shots containers & mini spoons. If you are making these shots for a party, serve them in fun shots containers with some mini spoons on the side so they are easy for your friends to enjoy.
  • Add garnish. All pudding shots are more appealing when served with fun garnish. Try a dollop of whipped cream, a sprinkle of cocoa powder, some crushed pistachios, gold sprinkles, edible glitter, or mini white chocolate chips.
  • Mix the ingredients together well. Sometimes it can be hard to get the pudding powder to dissolve smoothly. But it is important that it fully dissolves before letting the shots set, otherwise you will have clumps of powder in the final pudding shots.

Recipe FAQs

How do I make these shamrock pudding shots for St. Patrick’s Day?

Use Baileys Irish Cream liqueur instead of vodka and garnish the shots with some St. Patrick’s Day themed sprinkles with a dollop of whipped cream.

How many pudding shots does this recipe make?

It depends on the size of your shot glasses. If you are using shots containers (1 ½ ounces), it will make about 12 shots. If you are using shooters glasses, it will make about 6 to 8 shots.
