Sometimes on their own, papayas can be a bit bitter. However, they go so well with other fruit (such as avocado and banana) and are great in smoothies.

This papaya smoothie is a healthy breakfast meal or a great post-workout drink.

For other healthy smoothie recipes, try this mango spinach smoothie, tahini smoothie, or this watermelon pineapple smoothie.

For other papaya recipes, try this papaya coconut smoothie or this papaya cocktail.

How to buy papaya:

If you are looking to eat your papaya right away or within the next couple of days, choose one that is mostly yellow with a little green.

Papayas are fully ripe when they are all yellow. To the touch, they should be firm and heavy and a little soft, but not too soft.

When is papaya in season?

You can find papayas all year round — which is why this is a great recipe even for the winter time.

However, their peak season is in early summer.

Is avocado good in smoothies?

Yes! They add a lot of creaminess without making the smoothie taste like avocado.

Smoothies are a great way to use up leftover avocado you have already cut open before it turns brown.

Ingredients:

Papaya: Cut it open and remove the seeds, then cut it up into blendable-sized chunks. Most are fairly large so you will have leftovers to use for something else, such as this papaya rum punch.

Avocado: You will only need about ¼ of an avocado per smoothie, so if you are making a batch of four, one will work well. Or, make a single papaya avocado smoothie and an avocado toast breakfast!

Banana: This adds extra creaminess and thickness.

Orange Juice: Adds sweetness and flavor.

Mango Nectar: Use a quality mango nectar. Mango + papaya go very well together.

Honey: This adds just a tad of sweetness.
