Everyone loves a classic margarita, but flavored margaritas are even better.
This spicy blackberry margarita uses a jalapeno based syrup to add a kick of spice to the drink, just like in this Mango Jalapeño Margarita, this Spicy Pineapple Mezcal Drink or this Spicy Margarita Mocktail.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Blackberry Jalapeño Simple Syrup — The secret ingredient for this spicy blackberry margarita is the homemade spicy simple syrup that is made from real blackberries and jalapenos. It is basically a combination of this Blackberry Simple Syrup and this Jalapeño Simple Syrup.
- Balanced Flavor — This margarita has just the right balance of flavor between spicy jalapeno syrup and sweet blackberry syrup.
- Approachable for Beginners — This margarita recipe requires a bit more effort than some of my other margarita recipes, but it is still easy to follow for complete beginners.
Ingredients & Substitutions
- Blackberries: You can use frozen or fresh blackberries for this recipe. Generally frozen blackberries are less expensive and can be found year round. As a substitute, you can use blueberries or a combination of mixed berries.
- Jalapeño: You’ll need only 1 tablespoon of diced jalapeño for this recipe. You can use a habanero pepper as an alternative, but they are much spicier than jalapenos so decrease the amount you use to make the syrup.
- Sugar & Water: Sugar and water are used to make the simple syrup. Typically granulated sugar is used for simple syrup, but you can use brown sugar as a substitute. It will give the syrup a bit of a sweeter, richer taste.
- Tequila: Use a blanco, mid-shelf tequila for this margarita. Save high quality tequila for a classic margarita or for drinking on the rocks.
- Lime Juice: Use freshly squeezed lime juice for the highest quality drink.
- Cointreau: Cointreau is an orange liqueur that is commonly used in margarita recipes. Use Triple Sec or Grand Marnier as a substitute.
How To Make A Spicy Blackberry Margarita
Step 1: Heat the blackberries, jalapenos, water and sugar together in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir occasionally.
Step 2: After about 5 to 10 minutes, when the sugar has completely dissolved, strain out the blackberry and jalapeno chunks and remove the syrup from the stove.
Step 3: Add the blackberry jalapeño syrup, tequila, lime juice and Cointreau to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake and strain into a margarita glass with a salted rim.
Expert Tips
- Don’t let the syrup boil. Adjust the stove temperature as needed to prevent the simple syrup from boiling. Boiling the syrup can make the syrup too thick. The syrup should have a thin, water-like consistency.
- Use margarita salt. To level up your margaritas, use margarita salt for lining the margarita glasses with. Margarita salt has infused lime flavor for a really authentic margarita taste.
- Adjust the amount of spice. To make this drink spicier, add a bit more syrup. To make it less spicy, add in a dash of simple syrup or agave syrup.
