Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Real raspberries — The best thing about this margarita recipe is that the homemade raspberry syrup is made with real raspberries. This makes it taste SO much better than using a store bought syrup, plus it is much less expensive.
  • On the rocks — Most fruity margaritas tend to be blended, but not this one! For those of you who don’t want a slushie margarita, but a classic one served on ice, this is the recipe for you.
  • Easy to make — This recipe is hard to mess up, even for beginners. Plus it takes only a few minutes to make!

Ingredients & Substitutions

The ingredients needed to make the raspberry margarita.
  • Raspberries: If it’s summer and raspberries are in season, use fresh raspberries. However, frozen raspberries work just as well. If you use frozen raspberries, allow them to partially thaw before making the syrup.
  • Tequila: Blanco tequila works best with this margarita, you can use any type of tequila. Try to choose a tequila that is 100% agave for the highest quality.
  • Lime: Always use freshly squeezed lime juice for margaritas — it makes a huge difference in the quality of flavor.
  • Cointreau: All margaritas contain some type of orange liqueur. Cointreau is slightly higher quality than Triple Sec, but use whichever you have on hand or have a preference for. You can also substitute it with Grand Marnier.
  • Sugar & Water: Granulated sugar and water are used to make the raspberry syrup. You can use brown sugar instead of granulated sugar, but it will add a slightly more sweet, caramel flavor.
  • Salt: Salt is used to line the rims of the margarita glasses. You can use regular sea salt, or you can use margarita salt that is made specifically for margaritas. For a sweeter drink, use sugar instead of salt.

How To Make A Raspberry Margarita On The Rocks

Expert Tips

  • Store leftover syrup in the fridge. This recipe will make extra raspberry syrup. If you have leftovers, let the syrup fully cool to room temperature before storing it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Don’t boil the syrup. When making the raspberry syrup, heat it just enough so that the sugar dissolves, but don’t let it boil. Boiling the syrup can cause the syrup to become too thick.
  • Use large ice cubes. If you are looking to make the highest quality cocktail, use large ice cube molds to make giant ice cubes. The larger the ice cubes, the slower they melt. Plus, they make a great presentation for fancy cocktails.
  • Save the raspberry chunks. Don’t discard the raspberry chunks that you strain out from the syrup. They taste delicious when mixed into plain greek yogurt for a healthy breakfast.

Recipe FAQs

What does “on the rocks” mean?

If a drink recipe is “on the rocks” it means it is served over ice. Many fruity margarita recipes are served frozen, as a blended slushie. This raspberry one however is served on the rocks — over ice.

Can I use store bought raspberry syrup?

Yes, you can. However, store bought raspberry simple syrups tend to have a more artificial flavor. If you have the time, it is definitely worth it to make your own simple syrup at home.

What drinks can I make with leftover raspberry syrup?

You can use raspberry syrup in lots of cocktails, such as this raspberry gin fizz, this raspberry martini or this bourbon raspberry cocktail.
