Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Made with real cherries — There are no artificial flavors in this recipe! All the black cherry flavor comes from a homemade black cherry simple syrup made with real, fresh cherries.
- No bar equipment needed — You don’t need a cocktail shaker for this recipe. Technically you do need a muddler, but there are some suggestions below (see the FAQ section) for common kitchen utensils you can use instead if you don’t have one.
- Refreshing summer rum cocktail — The fruity flavor variation on a classic mojito makes this an especially refreshing summer rum cocktail that is absolutely delicious!
Ingredients & Substitutions
- Black Cherries: Black cherries are sweeter than tart cherries and will work best for this drink. You can use tart cherries, but you may want to add in a bit of simple syrup just to sweeten up the drink if you find it too tart.
- Sugar & Water: Sugar and water are used to make the cherry syrup. If needed, you can use brown sugar as a substitute but it will give the drink a bit of a sweeter, slight caramel flavor.
- Rum: Use whatever brand of white rum you prefer. Generally a good mid shelf rum is best for flavored cocktails — I like to use Bacardi. For a more tropical twist, you can add in a dash of Malibu, but don’t replace all of the white rum with Malibu or it will be way too sweet.
- Mint: All mojitos need fresh mint. Dried mint doesn’t work in a mojito. There are lots of different varieties of mint, but you can use whichever one you have available.
- Lime Juice: Always use freshly squeezed lime juice if you have it. If not, you can use a high quality bottled lime juice instead.
- 7Up: Typically mojitos are made with club soda which has a more neutral flavor. However, for this recipe I find 7Up or Sprite works well. Either one is fine to use in this recipe.
How To Make A Black Cherry Mojito
Step 1: Heat the cherries, sugar and water together in a small saucepan over medium heat. Heat, stirring occasionally for about 5 to 10 minutes until the sugar has dissolved and the cherries have burst.
Step 2: Let the syrup cool for a few minutes, then strain out the cherry pieces and cherry pits.
Step 3: Muddle the cherry syrup, mint leaves and lime juice together in a highball glass. Add in ice, rum and 7Up. Stir gently before serving.
Expert Tips
- Don’t tear the mint leaves. Muddle the mint leaves gently. If the leaves are tearing, you are probably muddling too aggressively. Press down to muddle, rather than shearing back and forth. Once the leaves are fragrant and you can smell the mint, you can move on to the next step.
- Make it a mocktail. This black cherry mojito makes a great mocktail. Just leave out the rum for a version that is great for adults who don’t drink as well as kids.
- Store leftover black cherry syrup. This recipe will make extra black cherry syrup. Let the syrup fully cool to room temperature, then store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. Use leftovers to make more mojitos, or try these Cherry Limeade Margaritas.
Recipe FAQs
Kind of. Buffalo Wild Wings uses black cherry rum instead of a black cherry syrup. I find a black cherry syrup adds a stronger black cherry flavor than flavored rum does.
Multiply the quantities of the ingredients for the mojitos by 4 or 5 times. Note that you don’t need to multiply how much syrup you make — one or two batches should be enough for a pitcher. Muddle the leaves, syrup and lime juice in the bottom of a pitcher, then add in the remaining ingredients and stir well before serving.
Yes. If you are using frozen cherries, you don’t need to let them thaw before making the syrup. Just add them directly to the pan with the sugar and water.
If you don’t have a muddler, you can use the back of a wooden spoon or the handle of a wooden kitchen utensil (such as a spatula).
