Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Summer Cocktail — The combination of cherries and limeade make this margarita especially refreshing and delicious.
  • Big Batch —  This is an easy recipe to make as a big batch cocktail for a group of friends. You can skip the cocktail shaker and just make everything in a pitcher.
  • Tangy — The cherries and limeade give this margarita just the right amount of tang. It’s not too tangy but also not overly sweet.

Ingredients & Substitutions

The ingredients needed to make the cherry margaritas.
  • Cherries: Black cherries work best for this recipe, but you can use tart cherries too. If using tart cherries, you may need to add a bit of extra sugar to compensate for the extra tartness.
  • Sugar: Sugar is used to make the cherry simple syrup. Granulated sugar works best, but you can use brown sugar as a substitute. It will give the drink a slightly sweeter taste.
  • Water: Water is used for making the cherry syrup. Use filtered water if you have it.
  • Limeade: You can make your own limeade or use frozen limeade. You can make a huge batch of margaritas using only 1 can of frozen limeade and it will save you a lot of time.
  • Tequila: Use your favorite brand of tequila for these margaritas. I like to use Jose Cuervo, but Sauza or Espolon are also great options.
  • Lime Juice: If you have the time, use freshly squeezed lime juice. You can use a high quality bottled lime juice as a substitute if needed.
  • Triple Sec: Triple Sec is an orange flavored liqueur that is often used in margarita recipes. You can use Cointreau or Grand Marnier as a substitute.

How To Make A Cherry Limeade Margarita

Step 1: Heat the cherries, sugar and water in a saucepan over medium heat. Once the sugar has dissolved and the cherries have burst, remove the mixture from the stove.

Step 4: Add the cherry syrup, limeade, lime juice, tequila and triple sec to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well and strain into the margarita glass.

Expert Tips

  • Use margarita salt. If you want to elevate your cocktail, try using margarita salt which is salt that is infused with lime.
  • Make a pitcher. This is a great recipe to turn into a large pitcher for friends. Multiply the quantity of ingredients by 2 to 3 times and mix everything together in a large pitcher. Chill in the fridge and stir well before serving. Don’t add any ice until you are ready to serve.
  • Make it a mocktail. These margaritas make a great mocktail. Just leave out the tequila and triple sec. You can also top it off with some club soda or 7Up for a bubbly drink.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make this a frozen cherry limeade margarita?

Yes! This recipe is delicious as a frozen drink. Just blend the ingredients together with some ice (or frozen cherries) until you get a slushy consistency. You may need to add in a dash more limeade and/or cherry syrup to balance the flavors.

Do I have to remove the cherry pits before making the syrup?

No. Since the syrup gets strained after being heated on the pan, you don’t have to remove the cherry pits first.

Can I use frozen cherries to make the syrup?

Yes. You can use frozen cherries to make the cherry simple syrup. You can just add them, frozen, straight into the saucepan.

Can I use a premade cherry simple syrup instead of making my own?

Yes. You can use a premade cherry simple syrup, but it will have a more artificial flavor compared to making your own homemade syrup.

Description

These Cherry Limeade Margaritas are the best refreshing cocktails for hot summer weather. They are made with cherry syrup from fresh black cherries and limeade for a slight tang.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Cherry Simple Syrup:
    • 1 cup cherries
    • ½ cup granulated sugar
    • ½ cup water
  • Cherry Limeade Margaritas:
    • 6 oz limeade
    • 3 oz tequila
    • 2 oz cherry simple syrup
    • 1 oz lime juice
    • ½ oz triple sec
    • margarita salt (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the cherry simple syrup. Heat the cherries, granulated sugar and water together in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir gently as the mixture heats. Press down on the cherries with a fork to burst them.
  2. Once the sugar has completely dissolved and the cherries have burst, remove the syrup from the heat and let it cool for 5 minutes. Then, use a fine mesh strainer to remove the cherries pieces and pits.
  3. Prepare your margarita glass. Run a wedge of lime around the edge of your margarita glasses. Gently press the edge of the glasses into the salt, rolling gently so it sticks. Set aside for now.
  4. Make the Cherry Limeade Margaritas. Add the limeade, tequila, cherry simple syrup, lime juice and triple sec to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well for 20 to 30 seconds. Strain and pour, dividing the margarita between your prepared glasses.

Notes

  • Make a pitcher: For a pitcher, multiply the quantities by 2 to 3 times and mix everything together in a large pitcher instead of using a shaker. Chill in the fridge until ready to serve. Only add ice right before serving.
  • Storing Cherry Syrup: Store leftover cherry syrup in and airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days.
