Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Easy — All you need are 3 easy to find ingredients and just a few minutes to make these shots.
  • Layered — Just like a classic Tequila Sunrise drink, these shots are layered yellow, orange and red to look like mini sunrises.
  • Make in advance — This is an easy recipe to make a few hours in advance of your party to save time.

Ingredients & Substitutions

The ingredients needed to make the tequila sunrise shots.
  • Tequila: Use your favorite type of blanco tequila. Since these are flavored shots, use a mid or even low shelf tequila for this recipe. As a tequila substitute, you can use white rum, coconut rum or vodka.
  • Orange Juice: Store bought orange juice will work perfectly well for this recipe. If you have extra time and want to elevate the quality of your drink, use freshly squeezed orange juice. For a flavor variation, you can substitute the orange juice with pineapple, kind of like in this Pineapple Tequila Sunrise recipe.
  • Grenadine: Grenadine is a pinkish/red sweet sugar syrup that gives these shots their “sunrise” look. You can substitute this for another reddish, flavored syrup, such as Strawberry Simple Syrup or Raspberry Simple Syrup.

How To Make Tequila Sunrise Shots

Step 1: Add the tequila and orange juice to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well and strain, dividing into 3 shot glasses.

Step 2: Gently pour the grenadine into each shot glass so it settles on the bottom.

Expert Tips

  • Stir before drinking. While these shots look great, if you drink them as is, they will taste very concentrated and sugary as the grenadine settles on the bottom. Gently stir the shots before drinking them to mix the ingredients together.
  • Use creative shot glasses. Layered shot recipes look best in tall, clear shot glasses or shot glasses that have a unique shape.
  • Chill the shot glasses. Either prepare these shots in advance and chill them in the fridge for about an hour before serving, or chill your shot glasses in the fridge or freezer before preparing them.
