Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Holiday Shot Recipe — Any drink recipe that is made with Kahlua or Baileys makes the perfect holiday recipe. Make a batch of these shots for your friends and family for Thanksgiving or Christmas.
  • 3 Ingredients — All you need are 3 ingredients for this recipe: vodka, Kahlua and Baileys, so you probably already have everything on hand.
  • Perfect Size — A lot of people enjoy sweet drinks but find a full-size dessert cocktail (like a Mudslide Cocktail) is overly sweet. These Mudslide shots are like mini sweet cocktails so they are the perfect size for people who just want a couple sips of a sweet drink.

Ingredients & Substitutions

The ingredients needed to make a mudslide shot.
  • Baileys: You can use Baileys Original Irish Cream, or any other type of Irish Cream Liqueur. Baileys also offers lots of seasonal flavor variations that are delicious and would work well as a substitute, such as Pumpkin Pie, Red Velvet or Caramel.
  • Kahlua: Kahlua is generally the most popular coffee liqueur, but you can use whatever type of coffee liqueur you like. You can also use chilled espresso as a substitute if you prefer, but it won’t layer as nicely as the Kahlua.
  • Vodka: Regular vodka works perfectly well, but you can use a flavored one if you want to make the shot a bit sweeter. Whipped cream, caramel or vanilla vodka would all work really well.

How To Make A Mudslide Shot

Step 1: Add the Kahlua and vodka to a shot glass. Gently stir to combine.

Step 2: Gently pour the Baileys on top of the shot to create a layer. Sprinkle with chocolate shavings and serve.

Expert Tips

  • Chill the ingredients beforehand. Since the ingredients in this recipe are not shaken in a cocktail shaker, it helps keep the shot extra cold if all the ingredients are chilled before making the recipe. Chill your shot glasses and liquors in the fridge or freezer for an hour before preparing this shot.
  • Reduce the alcohol content. If you are looking for a way to reduce the amount of alcohol in this shot, you can make a couple substitutions. You can replace the Kahlua with chilled espresso. You can also remove the vodka and replace it with either more Kahlua or espresso.
  • Pour the Baileys down the back of a spoon. If you are having trouble creating the shot layers, pour the Baileys down the back of a spoon onto the top of the Kahlua and vodka. This helps the Baileys pour more gently so it doesn’t sink and mix in with the rest of the ingredients.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make these mudslide pudding shots?

Do I have to layer these mudslide shots?

No. You can shake all the ingredients together in a cocktail shaker instead of creating the shot layers if you prefer.

How many shots does this recipe make?

This recipe makes three ounces, which is enough for one shooter or two shots.
