Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Festive — The caramel, cinnamon & peanut butter flavors in this Salted Nut Roll Shot make it a great, festive shot recipe that is perfect for the holiday season.
  • Sweet & Strong — This shot is very sweet and creamy, but also quite strong. Every ingredient contains alcohol. But, if you would like a weaker shot, there are suggestions below on how to make substitutions for that.
  • Easy to Make — This recipe takes just a few minutes to make and you can have a large batch ready for friends in 10 minutes.

Ingredients & Substitutions

The ingredients needed to make the salted nut roll shot.
  • RumChata: RumChata is a creamy liqueur that tastes like a combination of rum and horchata. Not every liquor store carries it, but it is relatively easy to find. As a substitute, you can use half & half or Baileys.
  • Butterscotch Schnapps: Use whatever type of butterscotch schnapps you are able to find. As an alternative, you could use caramel liqueur or caramel flavored vodka instead.
  • Peanut Butter Whiskey: You can use peanut butter whiskey, such as Skrewball Whiskey, or peanut butter vodka for these shots depending on your taste preference. If you don’t have peanut butter flavored alcohol, you could also use regular whiskey or regular vodka with a dash of peanut butter syrup.
  • Caramel Sauce: You only need a tiny dab of caramel sauce to line the rims of your shot glasses. This step is optional, but it adds a sweetness that helps balance out the strong alcohol content in the shots. You could use peanut butter or butterscotch syrup as a substitute (skipping the salt for these options).
  • Sea Salt: The sea salt is also for lining the rims of the shot glasses so that they taste like salted caramel. If you don’t like salted caramel, you can skip the salt step and just line the shot glasses with caramel.

How To Make A Salted Nut Roll Shot

Step 1: Dip the rim of the shot glass in a bit of caramel spread, then press it into the sea salt, gently rolling so it sticks to the caramel.

Step 2: Add the RumChata, butterscotch schnapps and peanut butter whiskey to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well and strain into the prepared shot glass.

Expert Tips

  • Adjust the amount of alcohol. While these shots are sweet, they are also very strong. If you want to reduce the amount of alcohol, replace some of the RumChata with half & half (or milk). You could also replace some or all of the butterscotch schnapps with a butterscotch or caramel simple syrup. Or, replace some or all of the peanut butter whiskey with a peanut butter simple syrup.
  • Chill your ingredients. These shots taste especially good ice cold. Chill your liqueurs in the fridge for a couple hours before preparing this shot.
  • Use fun shot glasses. If you are serving these at a Thanksgiving or Christmas party, consider serving them in fun, festive shot glasses.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make these shots in advance?

Yes. You can make a batch of these salted nut roll shots in advance and store them in the fridge until you are ready to serve them.

Can I make this shot with frangelico?

Yes. If you like, you can replace the butterscotch schnapps or the peanut butter whiskey with frangelico. It will alter the taste, but it will still taste delicious.
