Starbucks Doppio

This easy starbucks doppio is an easy to make copycat espresso drink. A doppio macchiato is made with two ingredients — a double shot of espresso, with a dollop of steamed milk and a scoop of bubbly milk foam.

A doppio macchiato is almost like a regular, traditional espresso macchiato, but it contains some steamed milk and more espresso.

When most people think of Starbucks macchiatos, they are generally thinking of latte macchiatos, which contain a lot more milk, and not as much espresso.

If you’re looking for these more creamy, decadent Starbucks lattes, try this pistachio latte or this iced white chocolate mocha.

Why this is the best doppio macchiato

  • It’s simple. There are only two ingredients, so it’s an easy drink to make.
  • It saves money. As long as you can make high quality espresso at home, there is no reason to buy this drink from Starbucks.
  • It’s the best way to enjoy espresso. If you like the taste of espresso, but also don’t want to drink it completely black, this is the best drink to have.

Ingredients

  • Espresso: Use high quality espresso beans. There is no disguising the taste of low quality espresso in this recipe.
  • Milk: Whole milk is richer and froths more easily. However, 2% will work as well if that is what you have on hand.

Instructions

Heat the milk on a small saucepan over medium heat. Don’t let it boil. Once a lot of steam is coming off the milk (about 2-3 minutes), remove the saucepan.

Use a handheld milk frother to froth the milk.

A scoop with a scoop of milk foam, held above a small white cup filled with espresso.

Add a large spoonful of steamed milk (the bottom, liquid layer of the milk) to the espresso. Then add a scoop of the milk foam on top.

FAQ

What is a Starbucks doppio?

A doppio macchiato is almost like a traditional espresso macchiato. A traditional macchiato contains a shot of espresso and milk foam. The Starbucks’ version contains two shots of espresso, a bit of steamed milk and a scoop of milk foam.

What size is doppio at Starbucks?

“Doppio” means double in Italian. A doppio macchiato contains two shots of espresso.

Is doppio stronger than espresso?

A doppio macchiato is made with espresso. Doppio refers to the number of espresso shots in the drink — in this case two. A regular espresso macchiato contains only one shot.

Expert Tips

  • This recipe makes extra milk. You will be left with a small amount of extra milk if you are only making one drink. It is difficult to heat a smaller amount of milk on a saucepan without having it burn. Ideally, make 2 or 3 macchiatos at a time to use up the milk.
  • Don’t burn the milk. When heating such a small quantity of milk, it is very easy to scald or burn the milk. Watch it the entire time you are heating it up and as soon as you see steam coming off of the milk, remove it from the stove. This should only take 2-3 minutes.
  • Adjust the steamed milk and foam to your liking. There is no exact measurement for how much steam or foam to add — just a dollop (large spoonful) of each. However, if you prefer a bit more steamed milk or foam, add that if you like.

Description

This easy starbucks doppio is an easy to make copycat espresso drink. A double shot of espresso, with a dollop of steamed milk and a scoop of bubbly milk foam.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 shots espresso
  • 2 oz milk*

Instructions

  1. Heat the milk on a small saucepan over medium to high heat. Continue to heat for about 2-3 minutes until a lot of steam is coming off of the milk. Do not let the milk boil or scald.
  2. Remove the milk from the stove and pour it into a tall glass. Use a handheld frother to froth the milk until it is double in size.
  3. The milk will separate into two layers: steamed milk on the bottom and frothed milk on top. Use a large spoon to scoop a dollop of steamed milk (underneath the milk foam), and pour it onto the espresso.
  4. Then, take a spoonful of just the milk foam (top layer) and place it on top of the espresso.
  5. You can adjust how much steamed milk and milk foam you want to add. A true starbucks doppio macchiato has just a dollop each of steamed milk and milk foam. However, you can add more or less to adjust to your taste.
  6. Serve immediately. Enjoy!
