What is simple syrup?

Simple syrup is a standard mixture that bartenders use to sweeten many drinks. It is made by heating water and sugar over a stove top until it dissolves and thickens into a syrup consistency. This pear simple syrup is basically simple syrup with a naturally infused pear flavor.

What do you use pear simple syrup for?

Fall is the perfect time for cocktails. Pear flavored cocktails and drinks are especially good at this time of year. This syrup is perfect for sweetening and adding flavor to your cocktail creations. Pear is a very subtle flavor. When making cocktails, it can be difficult to use ingredients that let the pear flavor shine through but also cut the bitterness of alcohol to make a tasty cocktail. Pear flavor in the form of a simple syrup does the job perfectly.

You can also use this syrup to naturally sweeten any type of tea while infusing a pear flavor. Just add in a spoonful to your tea and stir until dissolved. In summertime, mix it into cold beverages as well.

You can also drizzle this syrup over desserts for a little extra sweetness and flavor. However, drizzle it sparingly as it is very sweet.

How to make the pear simple syrup:

Start by heating the water, granulated sugar and pear chunks in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a boil then immediately reduce to a simmer, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Simmer for about 10 minutes, making sure all of the sugar has completely dissolved. Remove the syrup from the heat and let it cool down to room temperature before using. Store in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to a week or the freezer for up to a couple of months.

Description

This naturally flavored pear simple syrup is perfect for using to mix into your own cocktail creations or to naturally sweeten tea.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup pear, chopped into chunks

    Instructions

    1. In a saucepan over medium heat, bring the water, sugar and pear chunks to a boil.
    2. Once you reach a boil, immediately reduce the heat to a simmer and continue to simmer for about 10-15 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
    3. Strain out or separate the pear chunks. You don't need to mash the pear up through the strainer. Just remove them from the syrup.
    4. Let the syrup cool to room temperature before using. Store in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to a week or store in the freezer for a couple of months.

    Notes

    • When simmering the sauce over the heat, it will seem more liquidy than after it cools. Once you remove it from the heat and it cools to room temperature, it will turn into a more syrup-like consistency.
    • When removing the pear chunks from the syrup, you may be tempted to try to mash out all their juice to get extra pear flavor. This will just make the syrup less clear/pure. The pear flavor is already strongly infused!

Is it possible to use dehydrated pear? I want to make a sour pear syrup and wanted to use dehydrated pear and I’m wondering if you think that would work? I was also thinking I’d need less sugar when using dehydrated pear as it would be already sweeter!

Hi Courtney! I have never tried making this recipe with dehydrated pears, however I think it would probably still add in pear flavor, although it might not be as strong. Try to make sure they really break down well while you are heating the syrup (but don’t let it boil). I would keep the same ratio of sugar to water though since this helps give the syrup the right consistency.

We have a pear tree and struggle with ways to use them. This is such a good way to make sure nothing goes to waste.
