Ingredients & Substitutions
- Rum: I like to use Bacardi white rum for mojitos, but you can use whatever type of white rum you like.
- Ginger Ale: You’ll need about half a can of ginger ale per mojito. Ginger Ale is not the same as ginger beer, although it could work as a unique substitute.
- Mint: You’ll need a small bunch of fresh mint leaves per cocktail. There are different types of mint plants. Mojito mint will give the most “authentic” mojito flavor, but really any type of mint leaves work. Dried mint does not work as a substitute.
- Sugar: Granulated sugar works best for a mojito. However, you can use simple syrup instead if you prefer.
- Lime Juice: Use freshly squeezed lime juice or a high quality bottled lime juice.
How To Make A Ginger Ale Mojito
Step 1: Add the mint leaves, sugar and lime juice to a highball glass. Muddle the ingredients together until the mint is fragrant.
Step 2: Fill the glass with ice, add in the rum and ginger ale.
Step 3: Use a cocktail spoon to stir the mojito.
Expert Tips
- Don’t over muddle the mint leaves. Press gently on the mint leaves when muddling. Stop muddling when the leaves are fragrant. Over muddling can cause the leaves to tear, releasing a bitter flavor.
- Stir well before serving. Use a long bar spoon to stir and flick up the ingredients at the bottom of the mojito before serving. It really helps create a smooth drink and avoids the sugar from settling at the bottom of the glass.
- Make it a mocktail. This ginger ale mojito works really well as a mocktail — just leave out the rum.
Recipe FAQs
If you don’t have a muddler, you can use the back of a wooden spoon.
