Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • 4th of July Shot — This recipe uses raspberry lemonade, which gives more of a purple, blue, red layered shot, but you can use regular lemonade or vodka for a red, white & blue layered shot that is perfect for the 4th of July.
  • No Cocktail Shaker — You don’t need any cocktail shaker for this recipe! Just gently pour each layer on top and your shots are ready to go.
  • Make In Advance — You can make a large batch of these shots a few hours before an event and store them in the fridge until they are ready to be served.
  • Mocktail Version — With a couple easy substitutions, you can easy make a mocktail version of this recipe!

Ingredients & Substitutions

The ingredients needed to make the astro pop shot.
  • Raspberry Lemonade: Most versions of this shot recipe use vodka, but this recipe uses raspberry lemonade instead because it greats a unique purple layer and also tastes delicious. However, if you want a stronger shot or a clear “white” layer, then use vodka or regular lemonade instead.
  • Blue Curaçao: Use whatever brand of blue curaçao you have on hand. If you are using a non-alcohlic blue curaçao, I recommend replacing the lemonade with vodka (otherwise there won’t be any alcohol in your shots!).
  • Grenadine: Grenadine creates the pink, bottom layer of this shot. You can replace the grenadine with another pink or red simple syrup, such as strawberry syrup or raspberry syrup.

How To Make An Astro Pop Shot

Step 1: Pour the raspberry lemonade into your shot glass.

Step 2: Gently pour the blue curaçao down the back of a spoon on top of the lemonade layer.

Step 3: Gently pour the grenadine down the back of a spoon on top of the blue curaçao layer.

Expert Tips

  • Hit the inside of the glass first. When pouring each layer on top, try to get the liquid to hit the inside of the glass and drip down the side first, before landing directly on top. Gently tilting the shot glass a bit and/or using the back of a bar spoon can help you do this.
  • Be careful with substitutions. Not all substitutions work in this recipe, even if the color of the ingredient is similar. That is because the density of the liquids matter. Substituted ingredients may not have the same weight and won’t be able to form the same layers. If you are making substitutions, experiment first to see if they will layer in the same way.
  • Make it a mocktail shot. If you want to make a mocktail version of this shot recipe, use non alcoholic blue curaçao instead.

Recipe FAQs

Why did the layers in the shot mix together?

The layers of your shot may have become muddled together if you didn’t pour each layer gently enough. When pouring each ingredient, try to make the liquid hit the inside of the glass before touching the layer below it.

Can I make these shots in advance?

Yes, you can make these shots in advance. Store them in the fridge until you are ready to serve them. Make sure not to knock them or move them too much, otherwise the layers will blend together.

Why is this called an Astro Pop Shot?

It is supposedly named after the candy lollipop called an Astro Pop (although the colours of that lollipop are yellow green and red).
