Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Childhood Favorite — This shot will remind you of a childhood favorite candy — pixie sticks!
- Sweet & Sour — The balance between the sweet fruity flavors and sour mix in this shot is especially delicious.
- Customizable — Pixie sticks came in several different flavors and colors. This shot is a bright blue color, but there are instructions for making a pink pixie shot if you prefer.
Ingredients & Substitutions
- Grape & Cherry Vodkas: This recipe uses a combination of grape and cherry vodkas to mimic the flavors of pixie sticks. However, there are lots of different pixie stick flavors — you could use raspberry vodka, strawberry vodka, watermelon vodka, mango vodka or pineapple vodka instead.
- Blue Curaçao: Blue curaçao gives this shot its blue color and also adds in a hint of orange flavor. If you want a different colored shot (pink for example), use watermelon liqueur. Or, replace this with a bright colored simple syrup, such as Raspberry Simple Syrup or Strawberry Simple Syrup.
- Sweet & Sour Mix: You can use a store bought sweet and sour mix or you can easily make your own at home using lemons, limes, sugar and water (see the FAQ section below).
- 7Up: Use any type of lemon-lime soda such as 7Up or Sprite. You can use club soda instead but it won’t add as much sweet flavor.
How To Make A Pixie Stick Shot
Step 1: Line the rim of the shot glass with blue curaçao and granulated sugar.
Step 2: Add the cherry vodka, grape vodka, blue curaçao and sweet and sour mix to a cocktail shaker. Shake well and strain. Top with the 7Up.
Expert Tips
- Make it pink. If you want to make this a Pink Pixie Stick Shot, you can replace the blue curaçao with watermelon liqueur.
- Make it a martini. For a Pixie Stick Martini, leave out the lemon lime soda, and instead add in 1 to 2 ounces of watermelon juice, mango juice, cherry juice or pineapple juice.
- Serve them with homemade pixie sticks. Although pixie sticks have been discontinued, you can still make your own at home. Line the rims of these shots with homemade pixie sticks or serve them alongside a round of these shots.
Recipe FAQs
Yes. If you want to make this a cocktail instead of a shot, use ¾ ounces of each vodka flavor, and use 4 ounces of lemon-lime soda. You can also add a splash of watermelon or cherry juice.
First, make simple syrup by heating equal portions of granulated sugar and water together in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Once the simple syrup cools down, combine ¼ cup simple syrup with ¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice and ¼ cup freshly squeezed lime juice. Mix well and store leftovers in the fridge or freezer.
