This Overholt cocktail is kind of like an Old Fashioned Cocktail.

An Old Fashioned Cocktail is typically made with whiskey, bitters and an orange peel, although it can be made without bitters.

There are lots of other flavors that can be added into an Old Fashioned as well, such as in this Cherry Old Fashioned or this Pineapple Old Fashioned.

In this Overholt cocktail, a dash of vermouth is added for a bit of sweeter flavor.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Simple — This is a very simple cocktail to make. It takes less than 5 minutes and you don’t even need a cocktail shaker.
  • Spirit-forward — If you enjoy strong whiskey drinks, you will like this cocktail. You definitely taste the Overholt, but a dash of vermouth complements it well.
  • Made with Overholt — If you enjoy Old Overholt and are looking to use it in a drink instead of just drinking it on the rocks or neat, this is a great recipe for you.

Ingredients & Substitutions

The ingredients needed to make the Old Overholt whiskey cocktail.
  • Old Overholt: Without Old Overholt, this isn’t an Old Overholt cocktail. However, you can technically use another type of whiskey if you prefer.
  • Vermouth: A dash of vermouth adds some sweetness. You can use some regular simple syrup as a substitute, but this will make for a sweeter cocktail.
  • Bitters: Use Angostura bitters if you have them. If you don’t, you can try one of these substitutes for bitters.

How To Make An Old Overholt Cocktail

Step 1: Add the Old Overholt whiskey, vermouth and bitters to a lowball cocktail glass. Stir well.

Expert Tips

  • Add in some simple syrup. If you don’t enjoy spirit-forward drinks, you may find this cocktail too strong as is. Add in a dash of simple syrup to sweeten up the drink to your liking.
  • Add in an herb variation. If you want to create a unique cocktail, try adding in a dash of flavored syrup, such as a fig simple syrup or a rosemary simple syrup.
  • Use large ice cubes. If you want to elevate the presentation of your cocktail, try using one large ice cube rather than a bunch of smaller ones. You can make large ice cubes with a special ice cube tray.
