Kinder Bueno vs. Kinder Chocolate Bar

This recipe uses Kinder Bueno which is slightly different from Kinder Chocolate.

Kinder Bueno is a milk chocolate covered wafer filled with hazelnut chocolate cream. It is bulkier and rounder than a Kinder Chocolate.

Kinder Chocolate Bar is a milk chocolate bar with a milky filling. It has a more solid filling than the creamy centre of a Kinder Bueno.

Ingredients & Substitutions

Overhead view of the ingredients needed to make kinder bueno cookies.
  • Kinder Bueno: You will need 3 packs of two individually wrapped Kinder Bueno bars. Note that Kinder Bueno is slightly different from Kinder Chocolate Bars. You can however replace one with the other.
  • Flour: Use all-purpose flour. If needed, you can replace this with a gluten free 1:1 replacement flour.
  • Sugar: A combination of brown sugar and granulated sugar adds sweetness to these cookies.
  • Butter: Use unsalted butter. You can substitute this for vegan butter or a plant-based margarine instead.
  • Egg: An egg acts as a binding agent to hold the cookies together.
  • Baking Soda: A small amount of baking soda helps the cookies rise. This can not be substituted for baking powder.
  • Vanilla Extract: Vanilla extract adds a subtle flavor. You could substitute this with almond extract.
  • Salt: A dash of salt helps bring out the other flavors.

Equipment

  • Parchment paper to line the cookie tray.
  • An air bake cookie tray to evenly cook your cookies.
  • Mixing bowls to mix the ingredients together.
  • A handheld mixer to beat the wet ingredients together.
  • A rubber spatula to mix the cookie dough.
  • A 1 ½ tablespoon cookie scoop to scoop the dough.
  • An airtight container to store leftovers.

Instructions

Step 1: Beat the butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar together until creamy.

Step 2: Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.

Step 3: In a medium sized bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda and salt.

Step 4: In two parts, add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing only until just combined.

Process photos illustrating steps 3 and 4.

Step 5: Fold in the Kinder Bueno chunks. Chill the dough in the fridge for 30 minutes to an hour.

Step 6: Roll out the dough into 1 ½ tablespoon sized cookies. The cookies should be slightly flat. Bake for 11 - 13 minutes at 350F.

Process photos illustrating steps 5 and 6.

Storage & Freezing

  • Storage: Store leftover cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days after baking them. You can store them for longer in the fridge but they won’t stay as soft.
  • Freezing: It is best to store unbaked cookie dough in the freezer rather than baked cookies. To freeze, roll the dough into cookie-sized balls, individually wrap them in plastic wrap and store in the freezer for up to a month. Bake from frozen, adding an extra 1 to 2 minutes to the bake time.

Expert Tips

  • Add some extra Kinder Buenos. If you want extra Kinder Bueno flavor, add in even more Kinder Bueno chunks. You can also press chunks into the freshly baked cookies so they melt on top.
  • Use an air bake cookie tray. Air insulated cookie trays help you bake the perfect cookie by preventing overheating and burning.
  • Use a kitchen scale. Kitchen scales help accurately measure all the ingredients, making sure you get the same result every time.
  • Don’t overmix the dough. Mix just enough until all the dry ingredients have been exposed to the wet ingredients.
  • Don’t over bake the cookies. The cookies will be done as soon as the edges are slightly golden. They will continue to cook as they cool down.
  • Let the cookies cool before transferring them. After removing the cookie tray from the oven, let the cookies cook for 5 minutes before transferring them. This allows them to firm up slightly so they don’t crumble apart.

Variations

  • Kinder Chocolate Bar: Although this recipe uses Kinder Bueno, you can use Kinder Chocolate bars instead. Cut them into small chunks.
  • Milk Chocolate Chips: Add in some milk chocolate chips to make these cookies extra chocolatey.
  • Kinder Bueno Drizzle: In some places you can find Kinder Bueno filling spread. Warm a spoonful in the microwave for a few seconds and drizzle over freshly baked cookies for an extra decadent dessert.

FAQ

Do I have to chill the dough?

If you are in a rush, you can get away without chilling the dough, but the cookies may be flatter and slightly crispier.

Can I use Kinder Chocolate Bar instead of Kinder Bueno?

Yes. Cut the chocolate bar into small chunks and mix it into the cookie dough in place of the Kinder Bueno.

Can I make these Kinder Bueno cookies without brown sugar?

Yes. You can replace the brown sugar with white sugar.
