Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Bright Blue — The blue curaçao in these shots gives them a bright blue color that is especially fun when served at a summer party.
  • Easy To Make — There are only 4 ingredients in this recipe and it takes just a few minutes to whip up a batch.
  • Real Gatorade — There are two options for this recipe, depending on if you have blue gatorade on hand. Either way, you can make it with or without blue gatorade — up to you!

Ingredients & Substitutions

The ingredients needed to make the gatorade shot.
  • Vodka: These are vodka-based shots, but you can swap out the vodka for another type of alcohol, such as white rum, tequila, or even gin.
  • Blue Curaçao: Blue curaçao gives these shots their bright blue color and a hint of orange flavor. I use alcoholic blue curaçao, but you can use a non alcoholic blue curaçao syrup instead.
  • Lemonade: A high quality store bought lemonade works perfectly well for this recipe. You can use homemade lemonade if you prefer.
  • Sweet & Sour Mix: Sweet and sour mix is commonly used in a lot of different cocktail recipes. You can buy sweet and sour mix pre-made, or you can easily make your own at home using sugar, water, lemons and limes (see the FAQ section below).

How To Make A Blue Gatorade Shot

Step 1: Add the lemonade, vodka, blue curaçao and sweet and sour mix to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.

Pouring the blue curaçao into the cocktail shaker.

Step 2: Shake well and strain into chilled shot glasses.

Expert Tips

  • Use real blue gatorade. This gatorade shot is meant to mimic the taste and look of blue gatorade, but you can make a version using actual blue gatorade instead. If you have blue gatorade, use 1 oz blue gatorade, 1 oz vodka, ½ oz lemonade and 1 oz sweet and sour mix.
  • Add a sugar rim. This shot goes well with a sugar rim for a bit of extra sweetness to balance out the sour from the sour mix and lemonade. Run a wedge of lemon around the rim of the shot glass and gently press it into granulated sugar, rolling to make it stick.
  • Make it a cocktail. If you want to turn these shots into a blue gatorade cocktail, multiply the portions by 2. Top up the drink with a bit of club soda or 7Up to give it some fizz and make the drink less concentrated.

Recipe FAQs

Do these shots taste like actual blue gatorade?

This blue gatorade tastes somewhat like blue gatorade, but it is more that the color looks just like it. However if you really want the blue gatorade flavor in your shot, see the “Expert Tips” section for how to make this recipe using actual blue gatorade.

How do I make my own sweet and sour mix?

First, make simple syrup by heating equal portions of granulated sugar and water together in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Once the simple syrup cools down, combine ¼ cup simple syrup with ¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice and ¼ cup freshly squeezed lime juice. Mix well and store leftovers in the fridge or freezer.

How many blue gatorade shots does this recipe make?

This recipe makes 1 shooter or 2 shots. Shot glasses typically hold 1 ½ ounces of liquid, whereas shooter glasses hold 3 ounces.

Can I make these gatorade shots in advance?

Yes. You can make these shots a few hours in advance. Store them in the fridge until you are ready to serve them.
