Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Homemade strawberry basil syrup — the homemade strawberry basil syrup is what makes this mocktail shine! Similar to this strawberry simple syrup and this basil simple syrup, this syrup is made with an infusion of fresh strawberries and basil leaves.
  • Simple & refreshing  — This recipe is easy to make, and extra refreshing on a hot day.
  • Summer drink — This is the perfect spring and summer drink to sip all summer season!

Ingredients & Substitutions

The ingredients needed to make the mocktail.
  • Strawberries: If it is strawberry season, use fresh strawberries. Otherwise, you can use frozen ones. Let them partially thaw before making the syrup.
  • Basil: Use any type of fresh basil leaves. Dried basil won’t work for this recipe. You can use thyme or mint as a substitute.
  • Lime Juice: Use freshly squeezed lime juice for the best taste. You can substitute the lime juice with lemon juice if you prefer.
  • Sugar: Granulated sugar is used to make the strawberry basil simple syrup.
  • Water: Water is used to make the flavored syrup. Use filtered water to avoid any unpleasant flavors from tap water.
  • Club Soda: This mocktail is topped with club soda for a bit of fizz. You can also use sparkling water, tonic water, or Sprite instead.

Equipment

Here is the equipment you will need to make this strawberry basil mocktail:

  • A saucepan and a strainer to make the strawberry basil simple syrup in.
  • An airtight container to store any leftover strawberry basil syrup.
  • Cocktail glasses or a large pitcher to serve the mocktail in.

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1: Heat the strawberries, basil leaves, sugar and water together on a saucepan over medium heat.

Expert Tips

  • Don’t boil the syrup. Boiling the syrup can cause too much water to evaporate, leaving a thick, sticky syrup. Adjust the stove temperature as needed.
  • Save the strawberry chunks. Save the strained out strawberry basil chunks. These are perfect for mixing into plain Greek yogurt for a healthy breakfast.
  • Garnish the mocktail. Garnish the mocktail with strawberry slices, fresh basil leaves or a lime wheel.
  • Muddle some strawberries. If you like, add in some muddled strawberries and basil leaves when preparing this cocktail. But don’t skip the strawberry basil syrup, since this adds the most flavor.
  • Adjust the sweetness. If you want to make this a sweeter drink, add in an extra oz of strawberry basil syrup. For a less sweet drink, use only 1 oz of syrup.
