Description

This Black Cherry Old Fashioned adds a fruity, cherry twist on the classic Old Fashioned cocktail. It is made with a homemade cherry syrup made with fresh black cherries.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Black Cherry Syrup:
    • 1 cup black cherries
    • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
    • 1/2 cup water
  • Black Cherry Old Fashioned:
    • 2 oz bourbon
    • 1/2 oz to 1 oz black cherry syrup
    • 2 to 3 dashes Angostura Bitters
    • 1 inch orange peel (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the black cherry syrup. Heat the black cherries, sugar and water together in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir occasionally as the syrup heats and use a fork to press down on the cherries, bursting them. Don’t let the syrup boil; reduce the heat if needed.
  2. After about 5 to 10 minutes, once the sugar has completely dissolved, remove the syrup from the stove and let it cool for a few minutes.
  3. Use a fine mesh sieve to strain out the cherry pieces and pits.
  4. Make the black cherry old fashioned. Stir the bourbon, black cherry syrup, and Angostura bitters together in a lowball cocktail glass.
  5. Add in a handful of ice and stir again for about 20 seconds to chill the drink. Add in the orange peel twist (optional) and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Storing leftover syrup: Store leftover black cherry syrup in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days. You can use leftovers in other drinks, such as this Black Cherry Mojito or these Vodka Cherry Shots.
